Guwahati, Oct 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated a series of advanced healthcare facilities at AIIMS Guwahati on Tuesday, marking a major step forward in healthcare for Northeast India.
In Guwahati, the event was attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with MPs, MLAs, AIIMS Guwahati Executive Director Prof. Ashok Puranik, faculty, and senior government officials in a function organized at AIIMS Guwahati campus.
The newly launched facilities include drone services for the swift delivery of essential medical supplies, a state-of-the-art auditorium, and a dedicated radiotherapy block. This cancer care unit is equipped with advanced technology, including a high-energy linear accelerator, an HDR Brachytherapy Unit, and a 4D-CT Simulator, set to greatly enhance cancer treatment in the region. This infrastructure boost is expected to improve access to quality healthcare and establish AIIMS Guwahati as a critical hub for medical innovation and patient care in the Northeast.
The latest advancements at AIIMS Guwahati significantly bolster its capacity to provide specialized care, conduct research, and educate future healthcare professionals. With new state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities, including a 3T MRI unit, a Biplane Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) Cath Lab for interventional radiology and neurovascular procedures, and a Dexa Scan for bone health, the institute is now equipped to handle complex medical cases and push the frontier of cancer treatment protocols.
Furthermore, the newly established Night Shelter will accommodate families of patients who travel from distant regions, easing their stay and adding a layer of comfort during challenging times.
In his address, PM Modi highlighted that these enhancements are part of a broader national effort to ensure accessible, high-quality healthcare across India, especially in underserved areas like the Northeast. This commitment aims to bring cutting-edge healthcare within reach for all citizens and reinforce AIIMS Guwahati’s role as a central hub for advanced medical services and training in the region.
Modi emphasized India’s comprehensive approach to healthcare, structured around five core pillars: preventive care, early detection, affordable treatment, expanding healthcare access in smaller towns, and leveraging technology. He highlighted programs like Ayushman Bharat Yojana, which has enabled over 4 crore citizens to receive free treatment, and the Ayushman Vaya Vandana Card for seniors over 70, as part of the government’s mission to make healthcare more affordable and accessible.
AIIMS Guwahati’s Executive Director, Prof. Ashok Puranik, reiterated the institute’s dedication to advancing healthcare in Northeast India. In line with this vision, plans include a trauma evacuation centre, a child development and early intervention unit, and a stroke centre.
