Tragic Reality: 25-Day-Old Infant Sold for Rs 30,000 Amidst Poverty in Assam’s Dhemaji District

Guwahati, Oct 30: In a heart-wrenching case underscoring the dire impacts of poverty, a 25-day-old infant was reportedly sold for Rs 30,000 in Assam’s Dhemaji district.

According to reports, the newborn, a girl born on October 4 at the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh, was abandoned by her parents, Budhiman Borah and Sabita Borah, shortly after her birth. Facing extreme hardship, the parents allegedly resorted to a distressing decision to sell their child, highlighting a grim reality for many in impoverished regions.

The disturbing report came to light when a complaint was filed at the Silapathar police station against the parents, the buyer, and intermediaries. Dhemaji District Child Welfare Committee (CWC) chairperson Rupali Deka Borgohain disclosed that an investigation had been launched following reports of the sale. Child Helpline, Dhemaji, traced the parents, instructing them to appear before the CWC, but they reportedly ignored the order.

Further investigation revealed that the infant was sold to Pegu Sohoria and her husband for Rs 30,000. Thanks to a tip-off, authorities were able to track down and rescue the child, ultimately finding her at Dr. Chandrajit Doley’s residence in Silapathar.

Authorities uncovered the involvement of two more individuals, Bubul Borah and Dilip Saikia, who are believed to have facilitated the sale. Law enforcement officials are continuing to investigate, with hopes of uncovering more details about this troubling case.

When confronted by reporters, Budhiman Borah expressed the desperation that led to his actions. “Our girl child was born on October 4 at AMCH. Due to our poverty, we gave the child to another person,” he said. “A contact from the Village Defense Party (VDP) directed us to someone. After completing formalities at AMCH, we took our child but handed her over on the way back home.”

This tragic incident has cast a spotlight on the often-hidden hardships faced by vulnerable families, with authorities now probing deeper into the network of individuals involved in the sale of infants under financial distress.
