Meriema village bars government vehicles over NH-2’s crumbling condition

Must read

Kohima, June 29: The Meriema Village Youth Organisation (MVYO) has announced a complete ban on the entry and movement of all government-registered vehicles within its jurisdiction from July 1.

In a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, the youth body said the decision was taken after authorities allegedly failed to act on repeated representations seeking immediate repairs of the NH-2 stretch passing through Meriema village.

According to MVYO, memorandums submitted to the Chief Engineer of the PWD (National Highways), Nagaland, on March 23 and June 12 have yielded no tangible response, forcing the organisation to adopt what it termed a “compelled” measure.

The ban will remain in force until the department initiates appropriate remedial measures to restore the road, the organisation said.

However, MVYO clarified that vehicles engaged in essential services would be exempted from the restriction. Police vehicles, paramilitary forces, ambulances and other emergency medical service vehicles will continue to be allowed to pass through the area.

The organisation has sought the cooperation of the district administration and urged the PWD (National Highways) to address the deteriorating road condition at the earliest.

National Highway-2 is a crucial lifeline connecting Kohima with Wokha, Mokokchung and several districts of Eastern Nagaland. The highway’s condition has come under increasing scrutiny in recent months, with several civil society organisations raising concerns over its deteriorating state.

The move by MVYO comes amid growing public anger over poor road infrastructure in Nagaland. Recently, civil society organisations in Longleng also issued a one-week ultimatum to the authorities demanding urgent repairs to the damaged two-lane stretch of NH-2 in their jurisdiction.

As of Monday evening, neither the Kohima district administration nor the Nagaland PWD (National Highways) had issued any formal response to the youth body’s announcement.
