Shillong, June 29: The Meghalaya High Court on Monday upheld the conditional bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the alleged murder of her husband, Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, rejecting the state government’s plea to cancel her release.
A single bench of Justice W. Diengdoh dismissed the government’s petition challenging the bail order passed by a Shillong court earlier this year. The detailed judgment is yet to be made public, but with Monday’s order, the High Court has allowed the conditional bail granted to Sonam to remain in force.
The Meghalaya government had approached the High Court after the Additional District Council (Judicial) Court in Shillong granted Sonam bail on April 27, 2026, citing procedural irregularities in her arrest. The trial court had observed that investigating authorities failed to properly inform her of the grounds of arrest, a requirement under law, thereby infringing upon her constitutional rights.

During the hearings, the State, represented by Advocate General Amit Kumar, argued that the lower court had erred in granting bail and contended that Sonam had indeed been informed of the reasons for her arrest. The government submitted documentary evidence before the High Court and sought cancellation of the bail order, maintaining that the trial court’s conclusions were factually incorrect.
The case stems from the sensational murder of Raja Raghuvanshi during the couple’s honeymoon trip to Sohra in Meghalaya in May 2025. Investigators allege that the businessman was murdered in a conspiracy orchestrated by his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, with the help of hired assailants.
Sonam has consistently denied the allegations against her.
The High Court’s order pertains only to the question of bail and does not amount to any determination on Sonam’s guilt or innocence. The criminal proceedings in the alleged murder case will continue before the trial court.
