No Communal incident in Gomajhora, panic triggered by misunderstanding: West Garo Hills Police

Must read

Tura, Jan 23: The West Garo Hills Police on Thursday clarified that no communal clash or disturbance of public peace occurred at Gomajhora village and that the incident which triggered panic among local residents was the result of a misunderstanding stemming from misinformation.

According to a press release issued by the Superintendent of Police, West Garo Hills, information was received around 7:20 pm on January 22 that a large number of people from a particular community had entered a local tribal village at Gomajhora, causing fear and apprehension among residents.

Acting swiftly, a police team from Phulbari Police Station led by a Circle Inspector rushed to the spot and assessed the situation. Upon verification, it was ascertained that earlier in the evening, at around 5:30 pm, one Saif Ali of Gudibala village had lawfully sold cattle to Bablu of Rajpur village under Phulbari Police Station.

While Bablu was taking the cattle towards his residence, one of the animals escaped from his control near Gomajhora village and ran into an open paddy field. As Bablu chased the animal, some local residents misinterpreted the situation as a case of cattle theft, raised an alarm, and pursued him. The commotion led to panic and the rapid spread of rumours in nearby tribal villages.

Police confirmed after thorough verification that no theft had taken place and that the cattle had been legally purchased. It was further confirmed that no communal clash, attack, or attempt to disturb public peace occurred, and the incident was purely the result of a misunderstanding fueled by rumours.

The situation was promptly brought under control, and peace has since been fully restored in the area. Adequate police personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order, reassure the public, and prevent the spread of unverified or false information.

The police have appealed to the public to remain calm and maintain communal harmony. Citizens have also been urged to refrain from believing or circulating rumours and to verify facts with police authorities or the district administration before sharing any information.

The West Garo Hills Police further called upon responsible citizens and community leaders to help spread awareness and ensure that anti-social elements do not exploit such incidents to disturb communal harmony in the district.
