Imphal, Nov 19: Normal life in Manipur was badly affected on Wednesday following a 24-hour dawn-to-dusk bandh called by the underground Kangleipak Communist Party–Military Council (Progressive) in protest against the proposed Sangai Festival, scheduled to be held from November 21 to 30 in Imphal.
The bandh severely impacted the five valley districts, as markets, business establishments, educational institutions, and banks remained closed.
Main roads in the valley districts wore a deserted look. Public transport vehicles stayed off the roads, while inter-state and inter-district bus services came to a grinding halt.

However, movement of security vehicles was seen at strategic locations across the state. Air services remained unaffected, though Manipur was effectively cut off from the rest of the country by road.
Schools, colleges, business establishments, and government offices remained closed during the 24-hour shutdown.
“The bandh has affected normal life in Manipur. Most business establishments remained closed, and people suffered due to the shutdown,” said a resident.
KCP-MC (Progressive) Information and Publicity Secretary Maikhumba Meitei said the outfit called for boycotting the festival due to the prevailing situation arising from the ongoing ethnic violence in the state.
Manipur witnessed ethnic conflict in 2023, and the situation is still not normal. The state has been under President’s Rule since earlier this year.
