Kohima, June 27: Thousands of Catholic youth from across the North East have gathered in Kohima for the 5th Regional Youth Convention 2025, which officially commenced on Friday at the Mary Help of Christians Cathedral. The four-day event, running until June 30, promises a vibrant platform for faith-based engagement, reflection, and cultural exchange.

Organized by the Nagaland Catholic Youth Movement (NCYM) in collaboration with the North Eastern Regional Youth Commission – Indian Catholic Youth Movement (NERYC-ICYM), this year’s convention is themed “Pilgrims of Hope”. The gathering aims to empower young people to deepen their understanding of faith, share their experiences, and explore their vital roles as committed disciples of Christ in the contemporary world.

Attending the inaugural ceremony as a special guest, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma officially declared the convention open, in the presence of the Archbishops of Shillong, Imphal, and Guwahati.

He also took to his social media handle to express is excitement in being part of the event. Chief Minister Sangma called the youth attending the convention as “passionate young minds, vibrant cultures, and powerful voices”. He expressed his optimism for the event’s impact, adding, “Energized to see the coming together of young people from all over North East to connect, share, learn and grow deeper in Christian values and faith. Happy to declare the four-day Convention open.”

Highlighting the spiritual significance of the occasion, he called upon each of them to stay rooted to their culture, faith and share a deep bond with each other, together in Christ.

Most Rev. Dr. Linus Neli, Chairman NERYC and Archbishop of Imphal delivered a powerful sermon and led the Holy Mass centered on the theme of the convention.

The convention also coincides with the Silver Jubilee celebration of the Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM), the official youth body under the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) Youth Commission.
