Guwahati, May 12: Two nursing professionals from the Northeast were among the 16 recipients of the National Florence Nightingale Awards 2026, presented by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on International Nurses Day on Tuesday.
The awardees from the region are Ms Lalenthangi Hnamte from Mizoram and Ms Madhu Mala Gurung from Sikkim.
In her message, President Murmu said nursing personnel “exemplify the highest standards of service and play a crucial role in delivering quality healthcare, often in the most challenging circumstances.”
Ms Lalenthangi Hnamte, an Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) serving at Tuichawng AYUSH Health & Wellness Centre in Mizoram, was honoured for her 25 years of dedicated service in community healthcare, particularly in remote and tribal areas.
According to the citation, she played a pivotal role in promoting and safeguarding public health in difficult hilly terrain, often reaching communities on foot or by boat to ensure uninterrupted healthcare delivery. Her contributions to strengthening primary healthcare services in the region have been widely appreciated.
From Sikkim, Ms Madhu Mala Gurung, Senior Auxiliary Nurse Midwife at Rangpo Primary Health Centre in Pakyong district, was recognised for nearly 38 years of service among tribal and indigenous communities.
The citation noted her dedication during the COVID-19 pandemic and disaster situations, including floods, where she continued delivering healthcare services under extremely challenging conditions. Her work in public health and patient care has earned appreciation from district and state health authorities.
The National Florence Nightingale Awards are among the country’s highest recognitions for nursing professionals and are conferred annually by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to honour exceptional service and commitment in healthcare.
