Imphal, July 12: The National People’s Party (NPP), Manipur State Unit, on Sunday strongly condemned the arson attack on Kanto Sabal village near the Leimakhong Army Camp in Imphal West, describing it as a grave assault on peace and communal harmony.
In a statement issued by state unit president Dr. Lorho S. Pfoze, the party alleged that the houses in the Meitei village were set ablaze by suspected Kuki militants on July 11. The NPP expressed concern that the incident took place in broad daylight and in close proximity to a major Army installation, raising serious questions about the security of civilians living in vulnerable buffer areas.
Calling the attack a deliberate act that has displaced families and destroyed homes, the party said such incidents undermine ongoing efforts to restore normalcy and trust in the violence-hit state.
The NPP urged the state and central governments, along with security forces, to provide immediate relief and rehabilitation to the affected families, launch a time-bound investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible, and strengthen security arrangements in vulnerable villages to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The party also expressed solidarity with the residents of Kanto Sabal and appealed to all communities to reject violence and work collectively towards lasting peace and harmony in Manipur.
The statement comes a day after fresh violence erupted in the Kanto Sabal area, where abandoned houses were torched, prompting the deployment of security forces and the arrest of two persons in connection with the incident.
