Boko, April 2: With the Assam Assembly elections approaching, political activity in the Boko-Chaygaon constituency has gathered momentum, as the National People’s Party (NPP) on Wednesday inaugurated its election office and intensified outreach efforts.
The office, located near National Highway 17 in central Boko, was inaugurated by NPP national vice president and former Manipur MLA Irengbam Hemochandra Singh, along with Meghalaya PHE Minister Marcuise N. Marak, following a day-long campaign for party candidate G.B. Sangma.
Addressing party workers, Hemochandra Singh expressed confidence in the growing support for the NPP and urged cadres to intensify efforts in the run-up to the polls. Marak, meanwhile, claimed that the party is witnessing a surge in support, with leaders and workers from both the BJP and Congress joining its ranks.
Highlighting the party’s growth, Marak said the NPP, founded in 2012, has attained national party status within a short span and currently has representation in Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. He expressed optimism that Assam could soon elect its first NPP legislator.
Responding to recent remarks by Tura MP Saleng A. Sangma, who termed the NPP as a “BJP’s B-team,” Marak asserted that the party operates independently with its own ideology and leadership, dismissing the comment as a personal view.
The event also witnessed several local youths joining the party. NPP candidate Ganseng B. Sangma appealed to voters to back the party and its “book” symbol, while constituency in-charge Johnson J. Changma said voters are looking for a credible alternative to both BJP and Congress in the constituency.
The development signals the NPP’s attempt to expand its footprint in Assam as electoral battlelines sharpen ahead of the state polls.
