Boko, April 4: Signalling an aggressive expansion into Assam, the National People’s Party (NPP) held a public rally at Santipur village in the Boko-Chaygaon constituency on Saturday, with senior leaders pitching the party’s growing regional footprint and urging voters to back candidate Ganseng B. Sangma.
The meeting drew participation from village headmen and members of the Garo community, underscoring NPP’s outreach among indigenous groups in the constituency.
A host of star campaigners addressed the gathering, including Bajengdoba MLA Pongseng R. Marak, Manipur MLA M. Rameshwar Singh, NPP national vice-president I. Hemochandra Singh, and other senior leaders.
Marak highlighted the party’s origins under founder P. A. Sangma in 2012, invoking its “One Voice, One Northeast” vision. He pointed to NPP’s expansion across Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh, positioning Assam as the party’s next major political frontier.
Calling Ganseng B. Sangma a “strong and capable leader,” Marak urged voters in Boko-Chaygaon to support the party’s entry into the state’s political landscape.
Echoing this, Hemochandra Singh described Sangma’s candidature as NPP’s “first step in Assam,” stressing the need to build a broader base among the state’s diverse communities.
Rameshwar Singh, meanwhile, focused on governance gaps, alleging that several central welfare schemes have yet to effectively reach grassroots levels in Boko-Chaygaon. He said the party would prioritise last-mile delivery and cited NPP’s alliance with the BJP in other northeastern states as a model for improving access to government benefits.
He also flagged unemployment as a key concern, warning that the lack of opportunities for youth could lead to unrest if not addressed through targeted empowerment initiatives.
The rally marks a significant moment in NPP’s Assam campaign, as the party seeks to translate its regional influence into electoral gains in the state.
