Imphal, May 12: BJP’s lone Rajya Sabha MP from Manipur, Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba, has expressed optimism that a popular government would be formed in the state within the next two months.
“I strongly hope that a popular government will be installed in Manipur within the next two months. The President’s Rule alone cannot resolve the prevailing issues. A popular government can work closely with the people and help solve the present ethnic crisis,” Leishemba told reporters on May 11.

He acknowledged widespread public dissatisfaction with the state’s political leadership, stating that many elected representatives had failed to act collectively and decisively amid the ongoing crisis.
“A section of people have placed personal ambitions above the state’s welfare. President’s Rule had to be imposed because some prioritised power and self-interest over Manipur’s well-being,” he said.
The 60-member Manipur Assembly has been placed under suspended animation following the imposition of President’s Rule, although its term runs until 2027.

Last week, BJP’s North East in-charge Sambit Patra visited Kangpokpi and Churachandpur districts and held meetings with Kuki BJP MLAs Vungzagin Valte and Nemcha Kipgen, as well as several Kuki-Zo leaders and civil society groups, including the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU).
Kipgen had been the lone woman minister in the previous N. Biren Singh-led BJP government. During his visit, Patra, who is also a Member of Parliament from Puri, Odisha, held closed-door meetings in Imphal with former CM Biren Singh, Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, and other key leaders and MLAs.
