Guwahati, Apr 14: Even as Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh’s detention under the National Security Act (NSA) is set to expire on April 22, the Punjab government has approached the Union Home Ministry seeking to keep him lodged in Assam.
In a communication to the ministry, the state government requested that he be transferred to Punjab with the Centre facilitating his continued detention at Dibrugarh Central Jail. It has asked the Union Home Secretary to obtain the Assam government’s consent to lodge Singh in the jail under provisions of the Transfer of Prisoners Act, 1952, read with the Punjab Amendment Act, 2025, and convey a decision at the earliest for further legal action.

Singh was initially booked in an FIR registered on February 24, 2023, at Ajnala police station after he and his associates allegedly stormed the police station in Amritsar to secure the release of a jailed aide.
His NSA detention was extended in April 2024 and again in April 2025.
Nine of his aides, who were earlier lodged with him in Dibrugarh, have since been brought back to Punjab after their detention under the NSA was not extended.
In its April 11 communication to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Punjab Home Department cited inputs from the state Director General of Police and the Senior Superintendent of Police, Amritsar (Rural), stating that Singh’s preventive detention will end on April 22 and that he is likely to be re-arrested upon release the following day.
