Boko, Dec 18: In a significant development for the Rabha community in the Assam–Meghalaya border region, three key organisations—the Rabha Students’ Union, Rabha Women’s Council, and the Sixth Schedule Demand Committee—held their biennial convention at Hahim on Thursday, resulting in a complete restructuring of leadership and fresh committees taking charge for the next two years.
The event, held in the Sabyasachi Rabha Coordination Area, saw the dissolution of previous committees and election of new bodies, followed by an oath-taking ceremony and formal assumption of duties.
The convention was attended by prominent Rabha leaders including Hiteshwar Rabha, Assistant Secretary of the All Rabha Students’ Union; Montu Rava and Namal Kumar Rabha, Vice Presidents of the Kamrup District Rabha Students’ Union; Ankur Rabha, Organising Secretary; Jiten Rabha, Assistant General Secretary; Kalpanath Rabha, Vice President of the Sixth Schedule Demand Committee; Sadhana Rabha, Vice Chairperson of the Women’s Council; and Mallika Rabha, Secretary, along with several other representatives from Kamrup district.
Speaking to the media, Namal Kumar Rabha underscored the strategic and sensitive nature of Hahim—a region marked by underdevelopment and long-standing border complexities. He said the organisations have been working to sustain peace, strengthen inter-community harmony, and push for development in the area.
He added that Hahim’s importance is rooted in legacy and identity, being the birthplace of Sabyasachi Rava, founder General Secretary of the All Rabha Students’ Union. This, he said, makes the regional committees determined to advance holistic development in the area.
The day-long convention began with flag hoisting, homage to martyrs, and sapling plantation. The leadership elections took place in the afternoon representative session, resulting in the appointment of:
Rabha Students’ Union, Hahim Regional Committee
President: Bishay Rabha
General Secretary: Mithun Rabha
Sixth Schedule Demand Committee, Hahim Regional Committee
President: Prashanta Rabha
General Secretary: Basishtha Rabha
Women’s Council, Hahim Regional Committee
President: Anupama Rabha
General Secretary: Bonti Rabha
Full-fledged committees were also formed under each body.
The oath-taking ceremony was held in the evening, conducted in the Rabha language, marking the formal beginning of a new leadership term across all three organisations.
