Imphal, April 6: New Zoveng, a village in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, has been sealed off as a containment zone following multiple confirmed and suspected cases of rabies. The outbreak has raised alarm among residents, prompting swift action from local authorities.
District Magistrate Dharun Kumar, in an official order, has strictly prohibited the movement of domesticated pets, particularly dogs, in and out of the village. The order also mandated the immediate identification and vaccination of all pets and stray dogs in the area. “Surveillance teams will conduct door-to-door monitoring, health check-ups, and ensure that no domestic dogs are sold or transported during this containment period,” the order stated, warning of penal action against violators.

A Quick Response Team (QRT) from the Veterinary Department was dispatched to New Zoveng to assess the situation. So far, the team has surveyed around 30 households, vaccinated dogs and issued vaccination certificates while verifying existing records.
The rabies outbreak in Churachandpur is part of a growing concern across the region. Since January 2025, official sources have reported that at least 749 people have been affected by dog bites, with three fatalities attributed to rabies. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, seek immediate medical attention in case of dog bites, and report stray or aggressive dogs to officials.
