Malda Muslims promote peace amid Ram Navami tensions in West Bengal

Must read

Guwahati, April 6: At a time when political rhetoric is heating up around Ram Navami, the Muslim community in West Bengal’s Malda district is sending out a powerful message of unity and harmony.

In a gesture of goodwill, Muslim residents are preparing to welcome Ram Navami processions with flower showers, and by distributing water, sherbet, and sweets to participants — a symbolic act aimed at fostering peace and mutual respect between communities.

As political parties exchange warnings and counter-warnings over the upcoming festival, this initiative stands in stark contrast, highlighting the enduring spirit of brotherhood in Bengal. Organizers say preparations are in full swing to make this a heartfelt celebration of coexistence.

The move gains significance in the context of growing political tensions around the festival, which has increasingly become a battleground between the ruling party and the opposition. Malda’s Muslim community hopes their approach will serve as a model for peaceful coexistence across the state.

“This isn’t a one-time effort — we’ve been doing this every year,” said Asif Hossain, Secretary of the Atkosi Muslim Committee, adding, “Bengal’s soil is rooted in harmony. There’s no space here for communal or caste-based divisions.” He urged people to reject provocation and violence, saying, “Only love and forgiveness can heal a divided society.”

The backdrop to this gesture is politically charged, with Assembly elections just a year away. The BJP has been stepping up its Ram Navami outreach in what many see as a bid to consolidate Hindu votes ahead of 2026. This year’s preparations have been noticeably more intense and visible.

Given past instances of Ram Navami-related violence, including clashes in Kolkata, police are already on alert. Police have begun route patrols in sensitive areas since Saturday to ensure that the celebrations remain peaceful.
