Ampati, May 26: The district administration of South West Garo Hills on Tuesday launched a special re-enrolment drive for school dropout students at Nayapara in Mahendraganj under Zikzak block, with officials counselling parents and children to return to mainstream education.
According to district officials, 188 school dropout students have been identified so far across the district, though authorities believe many more are yet to be traced and brought back to schools.
Deputy Commissioner Kumari Annendya Raajsree interacted with students and parents during the programme and urged children to resume their education. She said education would help them make informed decisions in life and protect them from frauds and scams as they move to higher classes.

The initiative was jointly conceptualised by Zikzak C&RD Block Development Officer Smt. Torali K. Marak and Ampati I/c SDSEO Shri Emphul Ch. Marak, focusing on counselling both parents and children together to address the reasons behind school dropouts.
Assistant Labour Commissioner Leni Bethlen K. Sangma spoke on the legal implications of child labour and warned against engaging underage children in work.
District Child Protection Officer Tanweera M. Sangma also addressed the gathering, highlighting the issue of teenage pregnancy and its legal and social consequences.
Officials said the drive received an encouraging response, with five girls and three boys agreeing to return to school following the counselling sessions.
Emphul Ch. Marak thanked the officials, parents and community members for supporting the initiative and assured assistance to students willing to rejoin mainstream education.
