Williamnagar, July 21: The Garo Hills mourns the loss of one of its most gifted creative voices. Cellington Marak, a well-known filmmaker, songwriter, singer, and actor, passed away this morning at around 8:50 AM at ARHI Hospital, Guwahati, after battling lung cancer.
Cellington Marak made his debut with a family drama titled Nokdango Ka·sani, released in 2005. In 2007, he directed a music video called Take My Love, which deeply touched the hearts of many across the Garo Hills. The video became an instant hit among the youth of that era, for his lovely voice with music composed by his close friend, Mandrake M. Sangma.
In 2011, he assisted filmmaker Simon George S. Marak on the much-loved film Parakjajok Maina. Cellington served as Editor and Assistant Cinematographer, while also stepping in front of the camera as an actor, portraying a doctor. Most notably, he lent his voice as the playback singer for a heartfelt song that continues to resonate with many: “Gimangaha balwa baksa mikjapsaon miksonga” (The dreams had shattered in the blink of an eye). His haunting voice made the song unforgettable and remains one of the film’s most cherished memories.
In 2018, Cellington and Mandrake M. Sangma reunited to release Take My Love 2, another music video that was warmly received by the people of Garo Hills. He once again sang the song while Mandrake directed the music.
Their collaboration continued in December 2019 with Destiny of Love, part of the Take My Love project. The video gained massive popularity, garnering over 3.7 million views on YouTube.
His final project, A·sel, was still in production at the time of his passing. Fans across the region were eagerly waiting for its release. Speaking to Hub News, his close friend Mandrake M. Sangma shared, “We will complete the project by any means. To honour his memory and express our love and respect for him.”
Cellington Marak’s contribution to the Garo film and music industry will never be forgotten. His creativity, voice, and spirit will continue to inspire generations to come.
