Guwahati, Dec 13: Assam Police have arrested a retired Indian Air Force (IAF) officer in Tezpur on suspicion of maintaining links with a Pakistani espionage network, triggering serious national security concerns.
The accused has been identified as Kulendra Sarma, a resident of Tezpur’s Patia locality. Police said he was taken into custody late on Thursday night following sustained surveillance and a preliminary investigation.
A case has been registered against Sarma under Sections 147, 148, 152, 238 and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to investigators, Sarma was allegedly in contact with individuals linked to a Pakistani intelligence agency. During the investigation, police seized a mobile phone and a laptop from his possession.
Tezpur Deputy Superintendent of Police Haricharan Bhumij said that suspicious materials were recovered from the seized electronic devices. He added that certain information related to India was allegedly being shared with contacts suspected to be linked to Pakistani intelligence agencies.
“At this stage, we cannot conclusively state that he has confirmed links with Pakistan. However, based on inputs and evidence recovered from his devices, there is strong suspicion of such a connection,” the DSP said, adding that further inquiry is underway.
Kulendra Sarma had served as a Junior Warrant Officer at the Tezpur Air Force Station before retiring in 2002. After his retirement from the Air Force, he worked in the Electronics Department of Tezpur University and later retired from the university as well.
Police have accused him of secretly supplying sensitive information to a Pakistani espionage network. He will be produced before a court on Friday.
Authorities said the ongoing investigation will seek to establish the nature and extent of his alleged involvement, including the duration of the suspected contacts and whether any classified or sensitive information was compromised. More details are expected to emerge as the probe progresses.
