Rongrenggre HSS emerges overall champion at District Athletics Meet 2026

Williamnagar, May 6: The two-day District-Level Inter-School Athletics Meet 2026, organised by the District Sports Office, Williamnagar, in collaboration with the East Garo Hills District Athletic Association, concluded today with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship.The concluding ceremony was graced by local MLA and Cabinet Minister Marcuise N. Marak as the Chief Guest. Among those present were Superintendent of Police of East Garo Hills Stephen A. Rynjah, Assistant Commissioner A. Koch, President of WDSA Sengbath R. Marak, along with heads of schools, teachers, officials, and students who gathered to witness the colourful closing ceremony and prize distribution programme.

District Sports Officer and Assistant Director of the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Saljagring M. Marak, delivered the welcome address and thanked the Cabinet Minister for taking time out of his busy schedule to encourage and inspire the young athletes. He also expressed gratitude to all school principals, teachers, technical officials, medical teams, police personnel, and volunteers for their support in making the event a grand success.Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest Marcuise N. Marak expressed his happiness at being part of the concluding ceremony. He shared that despite having an important party meeting in Shillong, he chose to attend the programme as he had promised the District Sports Officer and wanted to personally witness the sporting talents of students from various schools across East Garo Hills.

He stated that the two-day athletics meet had not only brought students from different schools together but had also fostered friendship, unity, and a healthy competitive spirit among them. He encouraged the students to continue striving for excellence and said that such competitions motivate participants to work harder and perform even better in the future.

The Minister further emphasised the importance of discipline in sports and in life. He said that participation in athletics teaches discipline, dedication, and teamwork, qualities that would help students achieve success in their future careers and personal lives.

Congratulating the winners, he reminded the students that victory in the present competition is only the beginning and that greater challenges and opportunities lie ahead. He advised the athletes to continue practising regularly and preparing themselves for higher-level competitions.

Marcuise N. Marak also spoke about the upcoming National Games 2027 and informed the gathering that Meghalaya is preparing talented athletes to represent the state at the national level. He highlighted various government initiatives such as the CM Sports Scholarship and STAR Programme, stating that the Meghalaya Government is providing several opportunities and facilities for talented sportspersons.

He further mentioned that Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is investing significantly in the youth of Meghalaya and urged the students to make full use of the opportunities provided by the government.During the award ceremony, Susanichak A. Sangma of Loyola Secondary School, Williamnagar, was declared the Best Athlete in the Under-18 Boys category, while Ritimesha N. Marak of Rongrenggre Government Higher Secondary School won the Best Athlete title in the Under-18 Girls category.

In the Under-16 Boys category, Ollambe Chigrim N. Sangma from Loyola College secured the Best Athlete award, while Kimkimchi Shira from KGBV emerged as the Best Athlete in the Under-16 Girls category.

In the team events, Rongrenggre Government Higher Secondary School emerged as the winner in the Under-18 Boys category, while Loyola Secondary School finished as runners-up. In the Under-18 Girls category, Rongrenggre Government Higher Secondary School again secured the championship title, with Loyola College finishing runners-up.

In the Under-16 Boys category, Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School emerged champions, while Loyola College secured the runners-up position. In the Under-16 Girls category, Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School also claimed the championship title, with KGBV finishing as runners-up.

The Overall Champion trophy of the District-Level Inter-School Athletics Meet 2026 was awarded to Rongrenggre Government Higher Secondary School, while Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School secured the Overall Runners-Up title.
