Shillong, Mar 14: NCP legislator from Gambegre Saleng A. Sangma on Monday demanded for a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the 2018 bomb blast incident which led to the killing of his party candidate from Williamnagar Jonathan Sangma.

The demand was also supported by NPP legislator from Williamnagar Marcuise N Marak.

Jonathan (43) was killed along with his two security guards and his driver at Sawilgre village in East Garo Hills district on February 18, 2018. An Improvised Explosive Devise (IED) killed him when he was returning from a poll campaign.

While raising a supplementary query during the Question Hour, Saleng said nobody has claimed responsibility for the incident. “(Therefore) if an NIA or CBI probe could be put up for this Williamnagar incident,” he said.

In support, Marcuise said that the particular bomb blast where a candidate was killed is very serious. “I would like to urge the home minister, if an NIA investigation can be initiated,” he said.

In his reply, Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said that police have registered a case under various sections of the IPC and that investigation is being done by the police.

He, however, refused to provide further details citing that many of these cases are lying with some commission of inquiry.
