Scindia calls Mawmluh Cave ‘a subterranean archive of earth’s memory’

Guwahati, Nov 9: Union Minister for Communications and Development of the North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya M. Scindia described his recent visit to the Mawmluh Cave in Sohra as a deeply spiritual and symbolic experience, calling it “a subterranean archive of Earth’s memory.”

Scindia, who was recently in Meghalaya as part of his tour to review development initiatives, penned his views in Hindustan Times.https://x.com/JM_Scindia/status/1987369189242511457?s=20. He said his exploration of the ancient limestone cave reinforced his belief that the state represents “the harmony of nature, progress, and people.”

Stretching over seven kilometres, Mawmluh Cave — one of the longest in India — is internationally recognised as the geological marker of the ‘Meghalayan Age’, a period that signifies a major climatic phase in Earth’s history.

“The cave’s narrow opening led me into a passage carved over 4,200 years, where vast chambers, narrow passages, and underground streams merge in rhythm,” Scindia said, describing the experience as “walking through time itself.”

He noted that the cave’s quiet grandeur is a reminder of humanity’s oldest duty — to preserve and protect the Earth.

“Untouched by human hands and lit only by the shimmer of water on stone, it felt like entering the womb of the Earth itself. Each movement was time incarnate, reminding us that we are but fleeting visitors in her grand, ongoing creation,” he said.

Accompanied by veteran caver Bob Ryan, who has explored Meghalaya’s cave systems for over six decades, Scindia reflected that the journey through Mawmluh was not merely an adventure but “a metaphor for India’s own growth journey — gradual, patient, and guided by inner light.”

“Our emergence as Vishwaguru is accompanied by the unfolding of long-held potential, like a light once dormant now rising to guide others,” he added.

The Union Minister said Meghalaya’s geological and ecological treasures such as Mawmluh Cave, living root bridges, and the Sohra Experience Circuit demonstrate that the state is uniquely positioned to become a global model for sustainable and experiential tourism.

“Tourism in the Northeast is not about sightseeing; it is about soul-seeing,” Scindia said, highlighting that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, the government aims to develop such sites as destinations of learning, balance, and natural wonder.
