Guwahati, Jan 25: In a major push to unlock the commercial potential of bamboo in the North East, Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and Communications Jyotiraditya M. Scindia on Saturday launched two flagship bamboo projects aimed at strengthening artisan livelihoods, boosting exports and integrating the region’s bamboo enterprises with national and global markets.
The projects were launched at a ceremony organised by the North East Cane and Bamboo Development Council (NECBDC) under the Ministry of DoNER in Guwahati.

The first project focuses on strengthening traditional bamboo artisan clusters by improving market access, modernising designs and products, and linking artisans with digital platforms and organised retail ecosystems. The initiative seeks to move bamboo crafts beyond local markets and position them as viable, scalable enterprises.
The second project aims at the promotion of engineered bamboo products through cluster strengthening and export facilitation, tapping into the growing demand for sustainable construction materials and eco-friendly alternatives to timber and plastic.

Significantly, Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were exchanged with Amazon, Flipkart and All Time Plastics, marking a strategic effort to integrate bamboo-based enterprises from the North East into mainstream e-commerce, organised retail and industrial supply chains.

Addressing the launch, Scindia said the initiatives align with the government’s vision of transforming bamboo into a “green economic asset” for the North East by combining traditional skills with modern technology, design innovation and assured market linkages. He added that bamboo has the potential to generate large-scale employment, especially for rural communities and women, while reinforcing the region’s role in India’s sustainable growth story.

Officials said the projects are expected to enhance incomes for artisans, promote value-added bamboo products, and position the North East as a hub for high-quality bamboo and engineered bamboo exports in the coming years.
