Guwahati, Aug 14: Ahead of Independence Day celebrations, security has been tightened across the northeastern region with special attention given along the international border in the region with both Myanmar and Bangladesh.
Security forces have taken all possible measures to counter any threat from insurgents, as there are threats from Ulfa’s Indipendent faction led by Paresh Baruah.
Security forces have intensified security measures in Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat districts — strongholds of Ulfa (I).

Intelligence reports suggests Ulfa (I) and cadres of a faction of NSCN have entered upper Assam region from Myanmar.
Security has been beefed up many folds in Arunachal’s Tirap, Changlang, Longding districts bordering Myanmar.
Officials in Imphal said that the Central and state security forces have further intensified their efforts to maintain a round-the-clock vigil in Imphal valley as well as the hilly districts.
A huge contingent of the Army, Assam Rifles, the Border Security Force (BSF), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), along with Manipur Police, have been deployed in Manipur to deal with the ethnic hostilities in the northeastern states since May 2023.
Guwahati has been wrapped under unprecentended security cover by security forces since last year several IEDs were found without triggering device, ulfa (I) had claimed responsibility.

Assam Police have intensified naka checking across the state to ensure public safety. In Guwahati, city police have been conducting extensive checks as part of heightened security measures.
Sambhabi Mishra, ADCP, Guwahati said, “There has always been a security concern, especially during Independence Day and Republic Day in Assam, due to the prevailing—though declining—insurgency situation. Recently, there have been some attacks in Myanmar on ULFA camps. That’s why there has been more activity, and we are more cautious this time. We have been taking preventive steps for the last two months, both to deter incidents and to apprehend individuals associated with insurgent groups,”.
She added, “For this 15th August, we are fully focused on security. Extensive naka checking and patrolling are underway under the able leadership of RCP Parthasati Mahant, who has provided us with both guidance and operational independence. I assure the citizens of Assam that they are in safe hands,”.
