Must read

Imphal, May 21: In a significant development amid ongoing counter-insurgency operations, security forces in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district have recovered a substantial cache of military-grade weapons and ammunition.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a joint team comprising the Assam Rifles and Manipur Police conducted extensive search operations over the past 24 hours in the Kuki villages of Konsakhul, Pholjang, and Tingkhai. These operations targeted suspected temporary militant camps and forested hideouts under the jurisdiction of the New Keithelmanbi Police Station.

The search led to the recovery of a significant haul of weaponry, including one Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) with magazine, one double-barrel shotgun (DBBL), two country-made bolt action rifles, four locally fabricated pull-mechanism rifles, five improvised mortars, commonly referred to as “Pumpis”, Motorola communication device, twenty 12-bore cartridges and two bulletproof jackets.

All seized arms and equipment have been handed over to the respective police stations for further legal proceedings.

This operation is part of a broader crackdown on insurgent groups in Manipur, intensified following the imposition of President’s Rule in February 2025. Security forces have since launched multiple operations across the state, leading to the dismantling of several insurgent camps and the seizure of large quantities of arms and ammunition.

An official involved in the operation stated, “Our crackdown against insurgent groups will continue. So far, we have seized a huge pile of arms and ammunition from the insurgent camps.”

The ongoing ethnic unrest in Manipur, which erupted in May 2023, has resulted in nearly 260 deaths and displaced over 60,000 people. The violence, driven by land and political disputes and exacerbated by widespread access to illegal arms, has prompted security forces to intensify efforts to restore peace and stability in the region.
