Guwahati, Aug 29: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah today accused its leaders of engaging in “negative politics of hatred and contempt”.
Condemning the reported use of abusive language against Prime Minister Modi’s late mother, he said: “The people of India can never tolerate such degradation in politics. The Leader of the Opposition must apologise to the Prime Minister, his late mother, and the people of the country.”
Shah also reiterated the government’s stance on infiltrators, warning that their inclusion in voter lists could “pollute elections” and threaten democracy.
The Union Home Minister on Friday inaugurated the Brahmaputra Wing of Raj Bhavan in Guwahati and virtually launched and laid the foundation of eight projects worth ₹322 crore in Assam.
Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal were among the dignitaries present.
Shah said the Northeast, once troubled by unrest, is now on the path of peace, security, and rapid development under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. “Whenever the history of the Northeast is written, these 11 years of the Modi government will be written in golden letters,” he said.
The Home Minister also inaugurated the National Cyber Forensic Laboratory (NCFL) in Guwahati—the second such facility after Delhi. The lab, set up under the I4C initiative, will operate from the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy. Shah said policemen from all eight Northeastern states will work round-the-clock through the NCFL to counter narcotics trade, illegal smuggling, cyber fraud, and border threats.
He noted that the ₹40-crore Brahmaputra Wing, spread across 3,300 sq. m., will support constitutional functions and serve as a hub for students, artists, and researchers.
Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said the new wing, built over an area of approximately 3,340 square metres and overlooking the Brahmaputra, has considerably enhanced the appearance of the Raj Bhavan. This marks the first stage of its reconstruction; subsequent works would include a new Darbar Hall and other additions to establish a complete administrative complex. He said that the new facilities would enable the Governor to discharge his responsibilities more effectively.
