Sikkim: Accused in POCSO case escapes custody

Gangtok, May 29: A 24-year-old man, arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old minor, escaped from police custody in Sikkim’s Rangpo early Wednesday morning.

The accused was taken into custody on May 27 under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. According to police sources, he fled around 2:30 am after injuring a policeman on duty.

A fresh criminal case has been registered against him under Sections 262 and 132 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

“A manhunt has been launched to trace and arrest the absconding accused,” a police officer confirmed.
