Sikkim records 36.80% voters turnout, amidst altercations

Gangtok April 19: Sikkim polls for the 32 assembly constituencies and one parliamentary constituency. Sikkim witnessed 36.80 percent voters turnout across the State for Assembly constituencies and 36.75 percent voters turnout for the lone Parliamentary constituency in the State.

The election day was not entirely smooth, with altercations recorded in the Melli constituency where Citizen Action Party’s vice president Bina Sharma was allegedly attacked by supporters of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha party.

In another video from Ralap under Singtam-Khamdong constituency altercations broke out between supporters of SKM party and Sikkim Democratic Front party.

In various constituencies, the voting percentages varied, with notable figures including 47.37% in Namchi-Singhithang, 50.33% in Dzongu, and 41.46% in Maneybong-Dentam.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Golay who cast his vote in his native village Singling under Soreng-Chakung constituency , expressed gratitude to the electorate for their support and after casting his vote said that,” the people have made their mind to bring us back in governance. They want us come back in government for a second time. I would like to thank the people for coming out to vote today”.

He highlighted on the work done by his government in health, education sectors, despite COVID 19 pandemic being a hindrance to smooth functioning of his governance.

A confident SKM leader, Golay assured victory in all 32 assembly and one parliamentary constituency in the State.

Leaders from prominent political parties, including the (SDF) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), exercised their franchise, emphasizing the importance of democratic representation.

SDF’s Singtam Khamdong candidate MK Sharma who resigned as Health Minister with SKM government in January 2023 took part in the electoral process.

CAP’s CM candidate Ganesh Rai cast his vote in Melli constituency.Barfung candidate Bhaichung Bhutia caste his vote in Tinkitam village under Barfung constituency.

As the electoral process unfolds, the attention now turns to the outcome of the polls.
