Shillong, May 21: The Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, in collaboration with the Meghalaya Athletics Association, on Tuesday inaugurated the State-Level Inter-School Athletic Meet 2025 at the SAI STC, NEHU Campus, Shillong.
The three-day event, scheduled from May 20 to 22, brings together young athletes from across the state to compete and showcase their sporting talent.

The opening ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Richard Yanthan, Joint Secretary of the Sports & Youth Affairs Department, who served as the Chief Guest, and John F Kharshiing, Working President of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA), as the Guest of Honour. Also present were D.D. Shira, Director of Sports & Youth Affairs; Finely Pariat, General Secretary, MSOA; senior officials from the police, school authorities, sports department, and representatives of the Meghalaya Athletics Association.
The event commenced with a ceremonial flag hoisting, marking the formal launch of the multi-sport competition.
Addressing the gathering, Richard Yanthan said, “This event seeks to recognize the power of sports and athleticism in shaping lives, especially of the youth. The government is committed to developing Meghalaya as a hub of sporting excellence, which is reflected in its investments in infrastructure and athlete development through various schemes and policies.”
He added that the meet aligns with the government’s roadmap to promote sports as a means of holistic youth development in the state.

Speaking on the occasion, John F Kharshiing said the athletic meet holds special significance as Meghalaya prepares to host the 39th National Games in 2027. He described the event as a crucial step in building a vibrant sporting culture in the state.
In his keynote address, D.D. Shira informed that the state meet is the culmination of district-level competitions and features 780 athletes participating in 48 disciplines across various age categories. He also said 36 officials and 200 volunteers are managing the event across the three days.
