Guwahati, May 28: A political firestorm has engulfed Assam after Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi publicly acknowledged a 2013 visit to Pakistan, drawing sharp accusations from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who claims to possess damning evidence of Gogoi’s alleged ties with the Pakistani establishment.
Gogoi, addressing reporters at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi, explained that the trip was connected to his wife’s professional work as a public policy analyst for a climate-related project. “Even I, 11-12 years ago in 2013, have gone to Pakistan along with my wife. Based on this, Assam CM is trying to make a ‘C-grade movie’ to be released on September 10,” Gogoi said, taking a swipe at the Chief Minister’s planned disclosure.
Sarma, however, has escalated the matter, alleging that Gogoi’s ties with Pakistan go beyond a personal visit. “This is just the beginning, not the end. What lies ahead is far more serious. There exists every reasonable ground, supported by credible inputs and documented information, to suggest that Shri Gogoi has maintained proximity with the Pakistani establishment”

The Assam government has already announced that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been probing the matter and that its findings will be made public on September 10. “The Government of Assam, committed to transparency and accountability, will make everything public,” Sarma said, promising what he called “the complete truth.”
“The Government of Assam, committed to transparency and accountability, will make everything public on 10th September, once the Special Investigation Team (SIT) concludes its comprehensive inquiry. The people of Assam and the nation deserve the truth — and they shall have it, in full.
“But the people will also not forget — nor forgive — the Congress party and Shri Rahul Gandhi for deliberately promoting such a dangerous and compromised individual into the public life of our country” Sarma said.

Gogoi has dismissed the allegations as politically timed attacks aimed at discrediting him ahead of the elections. “If I’ve done anything wrong, what have the central agencies been doing for the past 11 years?” he asked. “The BJP has been in power in Assam and at the Centre — why now?”
The Congress leader also accused the Chief Minister of attempting to divert attention from more pressing issues in the state, including recent Enforcement Directorate raids linked to an alleged illegal coal syndicate. “This is just another episode in the BJP’s election mindset,” he said.
Sarma has extended his accusations to the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi, alleging that they have enabled Gogoi’s rise despite what he claims are serious national security concerns.
As the war of words intensifies, both sides are bracing for a long political battle, with the SIT report expected to become a flashpoint in Assam’s volatile pre-election climate.
