The event witnessed participation from students, teachers, forest officials, and environmental experts, reflecting a growing push to involve young people in grassroots conservation efforts.

Among those present were A.Ch. Sangma, Divisional Forest Officer of the Social Forestry Division, Tura; M.M. Sangma, Beat Forest Officer, Social Forestry Beat, Tura; representatives from the Forestry Department of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU); and officials from the District School Education Office (DSEO).

Addressing the gathering, A.Ch. Sangma spoke extensively on the “triple planetary crisis” of biodiversity loss, pollution, and climate change, warning that human activities are increasingly disrupting natural ecosystems.

Using examples such as the extinction of the Dodo bird and the discovery of plastic in tiger scat, Sangma highlighted the far-reaching consequences of environmental degradation and urged students to move beyond awareness towards direct action.

“The era of merely talking about conservation is over. Young people must now become active participants in protecting nature,” he said.

The programme also featured practical training sessions designed to equip students with hands-on ecological skills.Participants were trained in seed identification, compost preparation, and seed ball making, alongside lessons on medicinal plants, native flowering trees, and botanical documentation through herbarium preparation.

Students also took part in guided nursery visits aimed at connecting classroom learning with real-world conservation practices.

Officials said the initiative marks the beginning of a long-term environmental engagement programme in the region. Upcoming activities will include nature camps and specialised training programmes intended to strengthen environmental awareness and promote sustainable practices among school students.
