SHILLONG, JUL 8: National Law University Meghalaya marked its 3rd Foundation Day on Wednesday with Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere calling on students to build their careers on hard work, practical exposure, and a sense of service.

As Chancellor of the University and Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, Mohite Dere inaugurated the institution’s new Moot Court Room and led a ceremonial tree plantation before addressing students at the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Auditorium.

In her special address, she framed legal education as an ongoing commitment rather than a degree to be completed.

“There is no substitute for hard work, perseverance, and continuous self-improvement in the legal profession,” she said, urging students to treat learning as a lifelong process.

Mohite Dere stressed the importance of stepping outside classrooms to understand how law functions in real life.

She encouraged students to intern with district court lawyers, public prosecutors, defence counsels and NGOs to see the justice system up close.

“This will help you develop a deeper understanding of the justice delivery system and the realities at the grassroots level,” she noted, adding that future lawyers must approach the profession with “integrity, dedication, and a commitment to serving society,” while remaining open to diverse perspectives.

The day’s programme opened with a welcome address by Vice-Chancellor (In-charge) Kerpa Meida Lyngdoh Nongbri.

The University also screened a short film on its journey so far, highlighting academic programmes and institutional growth.Assistant Director of Sports Rishan Veban Diengdoh presented the newly introduced Student House System, which was formally launched by the Chancellor.

Registrar Prof (Dr) Baharul Islam delivered the vote of thanks, bringing the celebrations to a close.
