Tura, July 9: The “Open to All Summer Basketball Tournament” kicked off on Wednesday in Williamnagar, organised by the Williamnagar District Basketball Association (WDBA) in collaboration with the District Sports Office, Garo Students’ Union (GSU) East Zone and Surmount Club.
The four-day tournament, being held from July 9 to 12, is taking place at the Rongrenggre Government Higher Secondary School Basketball Court.
A total of 26 teams — 18 men’s teams and 8 women’s teams from across East Garo Hills district are participating in the tournament.
Six referees have been assigned to oversee the matches, with four from Shillong and two from Tura.
The opening match featured G-Force vs Hot Shot, following an inaugural ceremony graced by chief guest Babira G. Momin.
The opening ceremony was graced by the Chief Guest, Babira G. Momin, District Sports Officer (DSO) of Williamnagar, along with other dignitaries from the sports department. The welcome address was delivered by Henry S. Marak, President of the Williamnagar District Basketball Association.
In her address, Babira G. Momin highlighted the importance of teamwork, discipline, punctuality, and maintaining proper sportsmanship. She also urged the youth to stay away from drugs and other harmful substances and instead focus on constructive activities like sports.
Speaking exclusively to Hub News, Lenia M. Sangma, Advisor of the Williamnagar District Basketball Association (WDBA), stressed that the primary aim of the tournament is to motivate and guide youth by nurturing their interest in sports like basketball. He expressed concern over the rising drug abuse among the younger generation and hopes that such sporting events will help channel their energy into something positive.
The WDBA envisions a future where young talents from Meghalaya represent the state and the country in international basketball arenas.
