Dibrugarh, June 14: After a delay of over seven years since it was first announced, survey work for dredging the Brahmaputra River finally commenced on Saturday at Bogibeel. A team from the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has begun operations, focusing on a critical 300-metre stretch marked for immediate dredging.
Sources said actual dredging work is expected to start soon after the survey is completed. The selected stretch has become increasingly difficult for navigation, and dredging is expected to bring much-needed relief to ferry, cruise, and cargo operators.
The groundwork for this project was initially laid on January 24, 2017, when the then Chief Minister of Assam and current Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, inaugurated the preliminary survey in Dibrugarh. The project was envisioned to enhance river navigability, promote inland water transport, boost river tourism, and improve connectivity across Assam, the Northeast, and beyond.
Despite its ambitious goals, the project saw no physical progress for years—until now. Though modest in scale, the current initiative is being viewed as a hopeful beginning, reigniting expectations for the long-awaited transformation of the Brahmaputra into a viable and sustainable inland waterway corridor.
