Guwahati, April 28: In Assam’s Dhubri district, three men were beaten by locals on suspicion of being cattle lifters. The incident occurred on Sunday morning in the Baghdoghar area of Tamarhat.
According to the police, the three men were apprehended by the locals after they were found with stolen cattle. A police team arrived at the scene before the situation escalated further and arrested all three accused.
“The locals badly thrashed them after they found the cattle they had with them belonged to a fellow villager in the area. We have apprehended three persons in connection with the incident,” said a police official.
The accused have been identified as Naveen Rai, Nazrul Sheikh, and Mujibur Sheikh. The police are currently interrogating them to uncover their links to any cattle smuggling rackets.
The stolen cattle were identified as belonging to Surman Ali, a resident of Kalasanpara village in Dhubri. Dhubri district shares an international border with Bangladesh, and cattle smuggling through various routes, including the river route, has been a persistent issue in the region.
