Shillong, Oct 23: The Synjuk ki Khlieh Nongsynshar Shnong has submitted a memorandum to the deputy chief minister in-charge home (police) Prestone Tynsong urging the government to upgrade the Mawsynram Community and Rural Development Block to a Civil Sub-Division.
“The demand for Mawsynram Civil Sub-Division has been on since the past 20 years. However till date nothing has been materialized and so we are bound to follow the issue closely till it is realized,” Chairman of the Synjuk Hiamdor Rapsang said in the memorandum.
“Furthermore, as Civil Sub-Division is the only realistic way of bringing the administration closer to the people and as the present MDA government under your leadership has stated that it’s a people’s government hence, we are having a strong faith and belief that your government will listen and fulfill to the demands made by the residents of Mawsynram by not putting up any conditions because the region is equipped with various government offices and other criteria which is needed to be upgraded into a Civil Sub-Division,” he added.
Mawsynram C&RD Block, established in 1962, is one of the oldest in the state, covering 144 villages with a population of around 65,000. The block spans approximately 510km², with some areas being more than 112kms away from the district headquarters in Shillong.
The Synjuk argues that the distance and poor connectivity hinder development and administrative access, making it essential to bring governance closer to the people.
Mawsynram’s unique status as one of the wettest places on earth and a tourist destination has attracted researchers and visitors, but residents face hardships due to the distant administration.
