Imphal, Feb 4: BJP leader Yumnam Khemchand Singh, a black belt holder in Taekwondo and a long-time RSS functionary, was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Manipur on Wednesday at Lok Bhavan in Imphal.
Alongside him, Kuki BJP MLA Nemcha Kipgen and Naga People’s Front MLA L. Dikho took oath as Deputy Chief Ministers, marking the formation of a new NDA-led government in the state.
Earlier in the day, Khemchand Singh, elected leader of the NDA legislature party, staked a claim to form the government. The swearing-in comes after Manipur had been under President’s Rule since February last year amid prolonged ethnic unrest.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the newly sworn-in Chief Minister and his team.
“Congratulations to Shri Yumnam Khemchand Singh Ji on taking oath as the Chief Minister of Manipur. I would like to congratulate Smt. Nemcha Kipgen Ji and Shri Losii Dikho Ji on taking oath as the Deputy Chief Ministers of the state, and Shri Konthoujam Govindas Singh Ji, as well as Shri Khuraijam Loken Singh Ji, on being sworn in as Ministers in the Manipur Government. I’m confident they will work diligently towards furthering development and prosperity for my sisters and brothers of Manipur,” the Prime Minister posted on X.
The ceremony was attended by BJP legislators, senior party leaders, and key NDA figures from the state.
Khemchand Singh is regarded as an organisation-focused leader who has held several constitutional and ministerial positions in Manipur. Beyond politics, he has had a long association with Taekwondo. A black belt holder, he previously served as vice-president of the Taekwondo Federation of India and has played an active role in promoting the sport across the Northeast.
