History unfolded in Meghalaya on Friday evening as Shillong hosted its first ever Durand Cup match. The Group F matches of the 133rd Durand Cup kicked-off in a glittering ceremony attended by the who’s who of the state, including Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, ministers, civil and military officials.
The Shillong leg of the 133rd Durand Cup was inaugurated by Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma, amidst a dazzling opening ceremony on Friday, ahead of the first game here at the newly renovated Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium between local side Shillong Lajong FC and Nepal’s Tribhuvan Army Football Team.
The Meghalaya government on Wednesday announced that all schools that fall under the Shillong Municipal Area shall remain closed on August 2 due to the opening ceremony of the 133rd Durand Cup 2024, which is expected to draw huge crowd and lead of traffic congestion in the city.
Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri on Wednesday visited the JN Stadium in Shillong to inspect preparations for the upcoming Durand Cup 2024 matches. For the first time, Shillong will host six matches of this historic football tournament.
Kokrajhar will host the first match of the Durand Cup, between Northeast United FC and Bodoland FC at SAI stadium on July 30. The Opening Ceremony will also take place on the same day.
