Cold winds, descending from about three kilometres above sea level towards the north-east, have ushered in winter conditions in Assam and several other northeastern states.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a red alert for Sikkim and an orange alert for Assam and Meghalaya over the next 48 hours, citing an imminent flood threat posed by the swollen Teesta River.
The combined effect of the weather systems will result in light to moderate showers drenching most of Northeast India over the next five days, that is, till Friday (July 7).
IMD also said that heavy to very heavy rainfall, with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds is very likely to occur across the northeast region during the next five days.
