Kharkutta, Dec 28: Thousands of people from the Kharkutta constituency and from other parts from Garo Hills and Assam took part in the free health check-up camp through the Mobile Medical Unit initiative at Kharkutta’ mini Stadium on Thursday. During the camp, free eye checkup, other health check-ups, ECG, blood tests and free medicines were distributed by the Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) and district medical team.
The camp was organised with support from Community Action through Motivation Programme (CAMP) and on recommendation by the Kharkutta MLA Rupert Momin under the initiative of Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma.
The free medical camp was inaugurated by the MLA Rupert Momin in the presence of Kaushik Saikia, Project head of NE Region of CAMP, Dr. N. R. Marak, SDMO of North Garo Hills and doctors, medical staff, dignitaries and people of the area.
Kaushik Saikia, CAMP project head, said, “Community Action through Motivation Programme (CAMP) has been started for the first time in Meghalaya state and this is now at initial stage only. As our CM and MLA directed us to go for a free health check up camp, we started here in Kharkutta and got very good response. We have another motive of surveillance of various diseases among the population of the area. Today we initially touched up on the population and we will figure out what kind of illness and seasonal diseases are in this area, so that we will suggest a specialist in this area.”
“Today, two doctors, one ophthalmic technician, one laboratory technician, pharmacist and nurses are part of today’s CAMP mobile unit and also the district health team helped us to conduct the camp,” added Saikia.
He further informed that this kind of medical camp is the first for the district as well as for the state. However, in Assam, around 130 Mobile Medical Units (MMU) are already set up and other 14 states have too.
Dilipson Sangma (age 45) from Dokogsi village under Kharkutta Constituency and 25 kilometers from Kharkhutta emphasized, “This is for the first time we got free medical health check up and free medicines and advice from doctors. I come from a very remote village and I have to spend five hundred rupees for transportation. We came here to check up on our health, as our MLA Rupert Momin helped us to come here.”
Sangma urged the Meghalaya Chief Minister and the MLA to organize this kind of free medical health check up camps in the remote villages so that people of Meghalaya can get more benefits.
Meanwhile, MLA Rupert Momin said, “In our state, there are so many remote villages and the people of the area cannot visit hospitals. (we have realised) this important matter and regarding this matter we had discussed with our Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and today we organized this health camp in Kharkutta.”
“As soon as possible, the Meghalaya government will conduct free health check up camps in all the remote villages under the supervision of CM Conrad K Sangama. Another important part is some villagers still believe in superstition or local medicines and advice getting by some people called ‘Oja’ or something else. So, we have created awareness among the people on medical science,” he added.
He also informed that “if needed, camp will be extended till tomorrow or day after tomorrow.”
