Guwahati, Sep 4: Three institutions from the Northeast have made it to the top 100 in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, released today.
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati secured 11th place, Gauhati University ranked 52nd, and National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar stood at 97th—all from Assam.
This year’s NIRF covered 17 categories, including new additions such as Open Universities, Skill Universities, State Public Universities, and a Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) category.

Releasing the rankings, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said NIRF has emerged as a “trusted pillar” in the journey to make Bharat a knowledge superpower, while NEP 2020 has laid a roadmap to improve accreditation and global competitiveness of higher education institutions.
Union Minister of State for Education & Development of North Eastern Region, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, said with over 14,000 institutions participating, NIRF has become a credible framework that not only ranks but also drives quality, integrity, and innovation. “As we mark a decade of India Rankings, this journey reflects the resilience and aspirations of our universities and colleges,” he said.

Indian Institute of Technology Madras retained its 1st position in the Overall Category for the seventh consecutive year (2019–2025) and 1st in Engineering for the tenth consecutive year (2016–2025).
The top 100 overall list includes 24 state public universities, 22 private deemed universities, 19 IITs and IISc, 9 private universities, 8 NITs, 7 central universities, 5 medical institutions, 4 IISERs, one college, and the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI).
