Aizawl, Nov 11: Tourism in Mizoram has seen a steady rise following the opening of the Bairabi–Sairang railway line, according to Mizoram Tourism Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar on Monday.
For decades, Mizoram remained largely isolated from India’s main rail network, accessible only by long road journeys or limited flight connections. With the inauguration of the new railway line, the state is now directly linked to the rest of the country, making travel easier and more affordable for visitors.
During a meeting with NITI Aayog member Dr. V.K. Paul in New Delhi, Hmar said that hotels and homestays in the state capital, Aizawl, have been “flooded with tourists” since the launch of the railway line. He highlighted that Mizoram is rich in scenic and cultural destinations, and locals are increasingly taking pride in showcasing them to attract more visitors, the statement said.

According to data from the State Tourism Department, over 1.27 lakh tourists visited Mizoram between August and September this year — including 2,208 foreign and 1,25,250 domestic tourists.
Adding to the buzz, passengers and travel vloggers have been posting videos and reels of their train journeys, capturing the lush hills, deep valleys, and picturesque bridges along the route. These visuals have gone viral on social media, further fueling curiosity and excitement among potential travelers.
The meeting between NITI Aayog and the Government of Mizoram also focused on long-term strategies to strengthen the state’s tourism potential. As part of its ongoing engagement with the Mizoram government, NITI Aayog convened a review meeting with Tourism Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar and Dr. V.K. Paul to deliberate on ways to accelerate and advance tourism development in the state.

The discussion highlighted the scope, opportunities, challenges, and current offerings within Mizoram’s tourism sector — particularly the immense potential for ecotourism. It also emphasized the need for a comprehensive roadmap to ensure sustainable and inclusive tourism growth.
This engagement forms a key part of the collaborative framework between NITI Aayog and the Mizoram government to assess, analyse, and unlock the state’s tourism potential. Both sides agreed to develop a strategic framework to attract investment and strengthen tourism infrastructure, with a stakeholder conclave proposed as the next step.
The Bairabi–Sairang railway line, hailed as one of the most challenging projects in Indian Railways’ history, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13.
