Guwahati, Nov 11:The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released the findings of its latest Independent Drive Test (IDT) assessing mobile network performance across Shillong city and East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. Conducted between September 1 and 5, 2025, the tests covered over 269 kilometres of city routes, nine hotspot locations, and walk-test areas of 1.6 km, evaluating real-world network quality across 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G technologies.
The extensive assessment spanned prominent urban and rural locations such as Police Bazaar, Ward’s Lake, Elephant Falls, Umiam Lake, IIM Shillong, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Mawphlang Sacred Forest, and Mawsmai Cave in Cherrapunji, among others. The aim was to capture network performance under diverse conditions—urban zones, tourist areas, and institutional clusters.

The report reveals that Reliance Jio (RJIL) outperformed other operators in both voice and data services, with a Call Setup Success Rate (CSSR) of 99.12% and the lowest drop call rate of 0.89%, indicating highly reliable connectivity. Airtel followed with a CSSR of 96.34%, while Vodafone Idea (VIL) stood at 80.20%, and BSNL recorded the lowest at 73.63%. When it came to call setup time, Jio again led with a quick 0.97 seconds, ahead of Airtel’s 2.53 seconds, VIL’s 2.08 seconds, and BSNL’s 2.81 seconds. In terms of speech quality, measured by the Mean Opinion Score (MOS), Vodafone Idea surprisingly topped the list with a score of 4.51, followed by Airtel (3.93), Jio (3.68), and BSNL (2.97), suggesting variability in voice clarity across networks.
In data performance, Jio’s 5G service delivered the highest average download speed of 157.15 Mbps and an upload speed of 10.89 Mbps, maintaining a clear lead. Airtel’s combined 4G/5G performance came next with an average download speed of 55.11 Mbps and upload speed of 7.62 Mbps. Vodafone Idea’s 4G network averaged 17.32 Mbps download and 6.84 Mbps upload speeds, while BSNL’s network lagged significantly, posting just 0.98 Mbps for download and 2.39 Mbps for upload speeds.

When tested for latency, a measure of response time that affects browsing and gaming quality, Jio again performed best at 20.85 milliseconds, followed by Airtel at 28.80 ms, Vodafone at 46.35 ms, and BSNL at 82.00 ms, indicating that BSNL users experienced the most lag.
Performance in key hotspots such as Elephant Falls, Umiam Lake, Cherrapunji, and Police Bazaar showed that Jio’s 5G network peaked at 204.70 Mbps download speed, with Airtel’s 5G reaching 136.70 Mbps, while Vodafone’s 4G achieved 20.48 Mbps and BSNL’s 4G only 0.86 Mbps.
According to TRAI, the tests were carried out using standardised protocols and real-time monitoring equipment to ensure accuracy in assessing user experience across different environments.
