In the incident at Nagaon district of central Assam, Nur Hussain who is involved in robbery, land encroachment and drugs smuggling, was already in police custody when a group of bike-borne miscreants attacked at police.

Amar Thapa’s case

Goalpara police said they had inputs about Thapa and his group of two others — Samiran Rabha and Dweepjyoti Rabha — planning to conduct a robbery at Rongjuli town, about 45 km east to district headquarters, and conducted an operation at a residence in Belpara in the outskirts of Rongjuli.

“They were holed up in the residence of a widow when we raided. One 9mm pistol and some narcotics were recovered from their possession,” police said.

However, Thapa attempted to escape using backdoor during the questioning and jumped into the field behind, Police said.

“So, we had to shoot at his leg and take him into custody. Thapa was out on bail in connection to an abduction case,” police added.

Nur Hussain’s case

Nur Hussain of Dhing, about 28 km from the Nagaon district headquarters, on the other hand, was apprehended earlier and was taken to Kandhulimari about 18km from the Dhing Police Station to recover an illegal pistol he had hid there.

The police, however, were shot at by two miscreants who came on a bike and they too had to retaliate fire.

“In the shootout, Hussain got shot in his right leg. The miscreants managed ro escape, but couldn’t rescue Hussain,’ police said.

Nur was arrested in connection with an illegal house eviction drive in which he along with at least 20 armed assailants attacked one Urjat Ali and seven others. Ali sustained a bullet wound and is admitted in a hospital and is said to be in serious condition.

Both Thapa and Hussain were admitted to hospital immediately.
