Williamnagar, May 6: The two-day District-Level Inter-School Athletics Meet 2026 began on Wednesday at the Williamnagar District Sports Association Stadium, bringing together nearly 400 young athletes from across East Garo Hills.
The event has been organised by the District Sports Office, Williamnagar, in collaboration with the East Garo Hills District Athletic Association, with the aim of identifying promising athletes for upcoming state-level competitions.
The meet is being conducted in three categories — Under-14, Under-15, and Under-16 — with participation from 23 schools across the district. Students from Samanda, Songsak, and Rongjeng blocks are also taking part, making the event a vibrant showcase of emerging sporting talent from different parts of East Garo Hills.
Participants are competing in various track and field events, displaying determination and athletic ability throughout the competition.
Speaking exclusively to Hub News, District Sports Officer of East Garo Hills and Assistant Director of the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Saljagring M. Marak, said the Under-14 category features three Triathlon formats — A, B and C — aimed at testing the overall versatility of the athletes.
The triathlon events comprise a combination of the 60-metre sprint, long jump, high jump and shot put.
Marak informed that the first and second position holders from the district meet will qualify for the State Athletic Meet. The screening process for selected athletes will be held on May 18, while the state-level competition is scheduled for May 19 and 20 in Shillong.
Outstanding performers at the state meet will go on to represent Meghalaya at the National Athletic Meet.
On the prospects of athletes from East Garo Hills, Marak said the district possesses immense raw talent and expressed confidence that, with proper coaching, training, and exposure, local athletes can compete strongly with participants from other districts across the state.
