Two EMRS in Meghalaya ready for operationalization, more to follow

Shillong, Nov 19: The construction of the Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS), aimed at providing quality education to tribal children, has made significant progress in various locations across Meghalaya.

Two EMRS at Samanda in East Garo Hills and Pahamsyiem in Ri Bhoi District, have completed construction and are awaiting operationalization by the second half of this year, officials said on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has proposed sports infrastructure development under the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in four locations: Jetragre village (Chokpot Block) for football, Nongkhyllam village (Ranikor Block) for cricket, Dambo (Rongjeng Block) for athletics and Phlangdkhi (Pynursla Block) for football.

The proposed sports include football, badminton, cricket, athletics, and boxing.

The information was forwarded to the National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS) on May 20, 2022 but there has been no response till date.

The Manipur Industrial Development Corporation Limited (MANIDCO) was awarded contracts for the construction of 9 EMRS schools in various locations, including Chokpot, Baghmara, Mawshynrut, Gasuapara, Betasing, Shella Bholaganj, Mairang, Mawthadraishan, and Resubelpara.

The Meghalaya Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation Limited (MIDFC) has been assigned 23 schools, with 16 approved at a cost of Rs 48 crore and under various stages of construction.

The Water and Power Consultancy Services Limited (WAPCOS) has been allotted four schools, with construction work started in Nongstoin, Tikrikilla, Mawkyrwat, and Amlarem.

The progress of these projects –  Nongstoin: 46% completed, Tikrikilla: 8% completed, Mawkyrwat: DPR submitted and under approval and Amlarem: 42% completed.
