Shillong, July 20: United Democratic Party (UDP) legislator and member of the Assembly Committee on Environment, Mayralborn Syiem, has raised serious concerns over the deteriorating condition of rivers and streams in Meghalaya, citing widespread deforestation and unchecked industrial waste as key causes.
Speaking on behalf of the committee, Syiem pointed to large-scale tree felling and poorly managed reforestation efforts as major reasons behind the drying up of many natural water sources. “The deterioration of water bodies is a reality that can no longer be ignored,” he stated.
Syiem highlighted that several rivers, particularly in areas like Jaintia Hills, are suffering from severe pollution due to untreated industrial discharge. “We found that some factories are releasing effluents directly into rivers. This is causing major contamination of our streams and water bodies,” he said.
He clarified that while he was not speaking as a representative of the government, the Environment Committee has been actively addressing the issue. The panel has conducted field visits, including inspections at various industrial sites, and gathered first-hand information about the environmental damage being caused.
“The committee has already submitted a set of recommendations to the government,” Syiem informed, adding that more proposals are currently being drafted to help reverse the damage and safeguard the state’s remaining water sources.
Expressing hope for a timely response, Syiem said, “We want our recommendations to be seriously considered and acted upon. Clean and sustainable water sources are vital not just for our environment, but for the communities that depend on them.”
He urged the government to convert the committee’s findings into tangible policy and action, warning that continued inaction could have long-term consequences for both nature and public health.
