Shillong, May 26: Leader of Opposition Dr. Mukul Sangma on Thursday expressed disappointment against the report of the Independent Inquiry Committee into the alleged irregularities in the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL).

“(From) the very beginning itself, I have expressed my concern after having looked at the terms of reference of the notification for having a commission of inquiry to go into details of this alleged irregularities and corruption in the organization in MeECL and, therefore, you will not have the actual truth unearthed by this exercise,” he told reporters.

Mukul reiterated that a separate inquiry should be instituted on any instance of alleged irregularities.

“Therefore, the inquiry has to be specific on any instance of alleged irregularity or corruption. Therefore, the earlier notification for having a commission of inquiry with the kind of terms of reference is definitely not going to yield the kind of outcome to unearth the truth,” he said.

His statement came a day after the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the committee had found nothing wrong in the procurement aspects. “…in terms of other aspects of procurement and all they have not found any wrongs in any of them,” he said.

The CM had informed that the Independent Inquiry Committee has strongly recommended the state government to appoint a full time Chairman cum Managing Director (CMD) of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeELC) and to come up with new systems to look into the procurement aspects.
