NCVBDC observes National Dengue Day, spreads awareness ahead of transmission season

Tura, May 16: The District Vector Borne Disease Control Office (DVBDC), Tura, in collaboration with the IQAC Cell, CTE, Rongkhon, Tura, observed National Dengue Day on Thursday at the College of Teachers Education (CTE), Rongkhon, Tura. The event, themed “Connect with Community, Control Dengue,” aimed to equip future educators with essential knowledge about dengue fever and its prevention.

The objective behind organising this event at the College of Teachers Education was to equip the teachers in training with the basic knowledge and information about dengue fever and its preventive measures so that they could spread awareness to their future students and the community. The program emphasized preventive measures, such as eliminating mosquito breeding sites, improving water storage practices, using mosquito nets (LLIN) during daytime naps, wearing protective clothing, and applying mosquito repellent.

Chaitanya Awasthi, Asst. Commissioner, Tura, West Garo Hills was present for the program along with Dr. B. Ch. Marak, I/C NCVBDC, West Garo Hills, Tura; Dringstone M Sangma, Zonal Entomologist, Tura Zone; Dr. Meena A Sangma, Principal, CTE, Tura; the faculty and students of the college.

Dr. B. Ch. Marak gave an insight on the history, characteristics, causes and the preventive measures of the disease. She explained the contagious nature of the vector borne disease and its causality if not treated on time. She said that Aedes mosquitoes is the main carrier of dengue that exhibits intense biting behaviour during morning and afternoon, also known as daytime feeder.

Dringstone M Sangma, ZE, Tura Zone also gave a presentation on the entomological situation of Tura Municipal area, he said that most cases reported in the last couple were from the urban areas. According to their reports in 2023 there were a total of 49 positive dengue cases registered from the urban areas with the Police Reserve locality in Tura reporting a higher number of cases. He further gave valuable insights on the characteristics and life cycle of the Aedes mosquitoes and the disease.

Chaitanya Awasthi, emphasized on the importance of the program being held for the young teachers and how beneficial it would be for the community. He also conceded that this knowledge which the teachers will be imparting onto their students in turn will be of an exponential advantage to the administration and the medical department as those students will follow those practices in their homes.

The program concluded with a display of live specimens to help the young teachers in training further understand the objective of the program.
