Shillong, May 18: Tension gripped Lumshnong on Sunday evening after an irate crowd from a nearby village set fire to fifteen trucks inside the premises of Star Cement, following the death of a youth in an alleged accident.
Confirming the incident, East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner S. Awasthi said, “Fifteen trucks were burnt. Right now, the Additional SP and the magistrate are at the spot. As of now, the crowd has dispersed and we are monitoring the situation.”
When asked about the cause of the incident, Awasthi stated, “We also cannot say the final thing as the detailed report is awaited. As per information, there was an accident which led to the death of one youth. After that, the crowd from a local village gathered and the trucks were burnt inside the Star Cement campus.”

He further added, “Security has been beefed up. The magistrate and the Additional SP are on the ground. The crowd has dispersed, and fire tenders have reached the spot.”
Sources said the incident took place soon after one person died on the spot after he was allegedly run-over by the company’s truck. Following this, an angry mob marched to the Star Cement and set ablaze four trucks of the company.
Further details are awaited as the situation continues to be closely monitored by the authorities.
